I reviewed Kathleen Jamie's excellent new book, The Bonniest Companie for Caught by the River, where it is book of the month for October. The review is here for anyone interested in having a read.
She turns the light on
when she comes
into the room. Honestly
it is as simple as that.
Really looking forward to this on Friday evening...
Hopefully see a few friendly faces at The Good Life Experience this weekend... full line-up below, looks like it'll be a cracker.
Anyone looking for something to do on Friday morning of the festival, I'll be running a writing workshop with fellow Faber New Poet Declan Ryan in the library area. It will be pretty relaxed, and hopefully fun, talking about musical influences, song lyrics and how those things can feed into writing poems.
What a week just passed in Wales with Caught by the River, Fforest Farm and everyone involved at Caught by the River Teifi. Thanks to everybody who made it such a special week. And especially those who attended the workshops... three excellent groups who came up with even better poems.
This Saturday I'm up in Edinburgh at the festival, taking part in the Bus Stops, Cul De Sacs and Rutted Tracks event, reading some poems and discussing how different environments affect our literature.
Do come and say hello if you're up there...
August is shaping up to be one hell of a month, with readings at both Edinburgh Book Festival and Green Man, but first I'll be running a couple of workshops, reading some poems and getting involved in an In Conversation type affair with Jeb Loy Nichols at the inaugural Caught by the River Teifi festival at Fforest Farm, Wales. Everything Jeb's been involved with has been pretty great, but Lover's Knot was a real formative album for me, and of course he originated that whole country-soul re-appraisal business with those Country Got Soul albums a few years back. None of which have been bettered, despite being much imitated. Anyway, details of all of these events on the events page, or below, do come and say hello...

Unfortunately the event at The House of St Barnabas has been cancelled. Apologies for the late notice and any inconvenience, hopefully Heavenly and the venue can re-arrange at a later date this year...
Last month I interviewed the artist and film maker Robert Rubbish about our favourite part of London.
Robert's got form as one of those people that make Soho what it is. Although a reformed character now, he was a fixture in drinking dens the length of Dean St in his time. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, listening to him talk about his feelings for the place.
The interview is up here on the Unofficial Britain website, which is well worth a read too.
